"Phillies Still Fighting"

With the win last night its hard to buy into this, but the Phillies are only 2.5 games out of the wild card. They very easily could win it and make it into the post-season. I don't actually think this will happen, and most people likely don't. However, its amazing that they could still mathmatically make it.

Despite still being in the running, the fans are still generally very negative towards this team. In fact I can't think of a philly team that is as much hated as this one. People detest the owners and even most of the players.

So, it is still possible that the Phillies could make it into the post season. Does anyone think people would actually care if they did?

Nobody cares because everyone knows that the Phillies are a gutless, heartless team. They got back into the race by beating up on the weakest division in baseball (probably the weakest in the last 15 years). But when the time comes to play their own division (the strongest in baseball) they will fold faster than a house of cards in a hurricane. They are a shitty team, with shitty management, and shitty ownership. To put it bluntly they are the worst team in the HISTORY of team sports.

Lighten up, Francis.

I'm a casual fan, so I don't have the immense wealth of sports knowledge that J obviously has, nor do I have J's obvious gift for liberally applied hyperbole. From the looks of things, though, I'd say that those are good things, because I can still watch a Phillies game and enjoy it.

I don't care about team politics or management or salaries or any of that peripheral nonsense. I just like to watch a good game of baseball, and that's what the Phillies provide, win or lose. Maybe if I educated myself on the inner workings of the team and on the mechanations of baseball in general I could get more involved and more pissed off. Then again, even after all that education I'd still be powerless to do anything about them. Personally, I'd rather expend that energy informing myself about my political leaders and what they're up to so that I can do something about it at election time and not just yell at my TV and on blogs.

As for being "the worst team in the HISTORY of team sports", I find that hard to believe, but I suppose I must defer to J's encyclopedic knowledge of all sports teams dating back centuries across the continents. Perhaps they are even worse than Persia's polo team which lost to the Turkomans in 600 bc. And who could forget the dismal 1807 season of the Royal Montreal Curling Club? But for sheer awfulness, however, it's hard to beat the Roman soccer team of 217 ad, defeated by the lowly British.

Or did J perhaps mean to say "the worst team in the HISTORY of American, professional, major league team sports of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries"? Hard to say.

In closing, I'll add my own bit of hyperbole by saying that I still miss John Kruk, the single coolest player ever to tar up a batting helmet. [TL]

TL, you might be surprised to hear that J knows a lot about sports history, and he is very passionate about the Phillies. I think you may misunderstand his anger towards them. He is actually a fan of the Phils and seeing as they do absolutely nothing to improve their team year after year I give him credit for still watching their games. He does care about how the team is managed and their management currently sucks...if a team is not managed well, they won't do well, I am sure you know that.

He also isn't just the type of person to bitch on blogs about frivolous things(although he may occasionally yell at the TV), he also knows a lot more about politics than most people do and I am almost positive that he too misses John Kruk...then again, who doesn't.

TL, they are the worst team in the history of team sports. Sometime next year they will be celebrating their 10,000th loss, a feat that has never been achieved before, even those awful Persia teams. Look it up.

Isn't it cute that Jenna has to fight Jay's battles? Awwww.

John, you're just jealous that you don't have me fighting your battles for you. But you know, if I get a better offer...

Why would I look up a meaningless statistic? 10,000 losses by itself means absolutely nothing. If they only played 10,000 games, then I'd be impressed. Or if other teams played the same number of games.

10,000 losses means nothing unless you compare it to the total number of games played, and only then when it's compared to the similarly devised records of other teams. For example, the Phillies' record through the 2004 season is 7456-8576-465. That gives them an overall average of .452. Compare that to the lowly Milwaukee Brewers, whose record of 1542-1633-486 gives them an average of .421. Their total losses are far lower than those of the Phillies, but their record is markedly worse.

Yet the Phillies are "the worst team in the HISTORY of team sports"? Hardly. They're a safe distance from greatness to be sure, but still an appreciable distance from the bottom of the barrel. [TL]
