"Manhattan Madness"

Well it is pretty common knowledge that NYC is mainly a liberal city. It is also pretty common knowledge President Bush is generally one of the most intensely hated men in modern American history. Although, he still has his supporters the haters of Bush flat out loathe him. I have never seen anything like it in my life. In fact I wonder who would when in a hate poll between him and Saddam sometimes.

The Republican Convention is going to be held in the big apple in roughly a week and some people think it's just an awful idea. The one article getting a lot of attention in the past 24 hours I am not sure it is this bad, but then again I don't live there.

There is going to be A LOT of protests, and their is the potential for things to get out of hand. I would even say it could get historically ugly in the city that never sleeps. Republicans are being blamed for exploliting the 9/11 attacks, and they are defending themselves claiming only good can come from pumping some cash into the NYC economy that has struggled since 9/11.

So what do you think loyal readers is all hell going to break loose in NYC?

Well, of course I support the idea of protests. I think it's shameful what the Republicans are doing in exploiting the 9/11 anniversary, but not surprising. But I do hope that all hell does not break loose. Protest organizers are doing what little they can to try to keep their people in line, but there's no way to screen out the assholes, unfortunately.

One of two things could happen. Some small minority of protesters could go completely apeshit, or some small minority of local police/security could go completely apeshit. I expect one of those two things to happen, and we'll spend two weeks after the convention arguing about which one it was.

Two questions Drew or anyone who wants to field them for that matter.

1. Do you think they should have put a ban on holding a convention in NYC this year? I mean do you think they should NOT have gone there because of 9/11 ?

2. I don't think the Mayor of NYC is thinking right, perhaps he should do the same they did in Boston and make the protests be confined to a certain area.

The more I think about it the more I am concerned about the pending chaos. Their was an article in the Philly Inquier today about the poor people group (the actual name escapes me) they grab random crazy people off the street that don't know whats going on to join their cause. Many people think this is going to be a free for all. Hate Bush if you want but this turning to volience will just make Americans look like animals.

Time is ticking.....hopefully nothing happens but I doubt it.

Keith did you actually read the article in the paper or just the headline and form an opinion form that? Because I actually read the article and NOWHERE does it mention the group picking up random homeless and crazy people and making them protest. The group is called the Kensington Welfare Rights Union, and they fight for the rights of the poor and homeless. Some members of the group are homeless, former homeless, recovering drug addicts and college kids, among others. The head of this group never mentions any kind of anarchist march, they just want a peaceful march that gets their agenda heard. This kind of shit is what I was talking about a few comments ago about how Tuckers World has common themes of false information.

Also rioting is going to be a moot point because the NYPD is threatening to strike (illegally) because they, along with the FDNY, have been royally screwed by the city since 9/11.

1) I wouldn't go that far. But the Republicans knew there would be a backlash from having their convention in NYC. What's even worse, though, is that they're holding it so late, specifically so that they can roll the post-convention news coverage right into the 9/11 anniversary coverage. The convention is so late that Bush won't be officially nominated until September 2. Several states have had to amend their election laws, because that's after the cutoff date for getting a candidate onto the ballot. I'm not saying that the Republicans should have been barred from having their convention in NYC (I don't see who could do that), and I'm not even saying they shouldn't have decided to hold it there, but they are exploiting 9/11, and deserve to be called on it.

2) I'm not certain, but I think NYC is trying to confine the protests to particular areas. I don't know how successful they'll be. There's going to a lot of people, so you need a place that's a) reasonably close to the convention, and b) large enough to accomodate so many people. I have great sympathy for New York over this, even though I hate that city, because dealing with this is going to be a hug, huge problem even if everything remains peaceful.

Also, on Jay's post, I really hope the NYPD doesn't strike. I understand that they're angry at the Bush Administration, and they should be, but police strikes are illegal for a reason.

Lastly, Keith, the first line of your original post says NYC is mainly a liberal city. I agree, of course, but it's interesting that the last Democratic Mayor of NYC (David Dinkins) left office in 1994 after losing the 1993 election to Rudy Giuliani. The Mayor of NYC has been a Republican for over a decade now. It is a liberal city (with Republican sections, like Staten Island), so it's weird that it's been so long since a Democrat was in charge.

Good point Drew. The date is really late, but I really dont think anyone is going wasn't going to vote for Bush is going to buy into the tactic. I wonder however if they didn't choice NYC if the democrats would have scopped it up and used it as away to say not even NYC likes Bush. Do you who selected the city first?

Jay as for your comment. How else do you get homeless people? Randomly of course. Ok, maybe it was a tad unfair to group them in a post mentioning voilence in NYC. Most of these people are real extremists and many of the members loopy. I have seen members talk on the news and it rivals Jay Walking. Although, they may have a good point it is just one more group to the mix.

Sorry if calling these people loopy, it might not be fair. Its just my view. Im not saying they are going to cause any real problems.
