"Lame Office"

The box office sales at the movies are pretty miserable. They are saying the lowest since 1985. Anyone have any theories on this? One of mine which I haven't seen yet is the actual price of movie tickets. I mean for two people its pretty close to $20 at night without even eating anything.

Or is it simply the movies out just suck that bad? Any theories loyal readers?

I love net flix. I imagine that lots of people with the HDTVS are just waiting a few months.

Hell, rule out rentals and downloads and your can buy most new releases for 14.99 when the come out on video. So, its almost the same price as going to see the movies and you dont have to worry about some jackass with a cell phone yaking away while you are trying to enjoy the film.

Somewhere out in the desert... about five miles west of Bayji, Iraq.

Where is your summer movie review. It was the only thing keeping me from killing myself last year and I'm having dreams about it now. But please no spoilers.

Going out to the movies is an event. It's a chance to get out of the house, enjoy a communal experience of sorts with fellow moviegoers, maybe grab some dinner, and make a night or afternoon of it.

It's about much more than the movie itself. That's why I still enjoy going out to the movies, even though I have an HDTV.

My theory about the box office slump is that people are being more selective about how they watch movies. Let's face it: if you want to go to the movies for the sake of going to the movies, you'll see anything. But if you want your cinematic dollars to count, you'll be a bit more picky. More people seem to be willing to wait and save their money to rent a film rather than take a chance on going out and seeing a turkey. There's nothing that would get me into a movie theater to see a Will Ferrell film, but I may be willing to endure one on HBO or something.

As for the complications that little kids create, yeah, it's a bitch. Mine are 11 and 6 so it's a little easier now—finally!—but the early years were rough. Last Sunday we went out at the last minute to see Herbie: Fully Loaded and it worked out really well. But when they were really little, it was nigh impossible to take them to the movies.

There is one more thing that dovetails into this thread: the cost of going to the movies. Yikes! It has been ages since we paid full price for a movie, so we were floored when the total bill for Herbie, tickets and food, came to $55. Usually we go to the first showing at Cinemark and pay $4.50 per ticket, but this was Loew's Cherry Hill in prime time. Wow, what an unfortunate eye opener. [TL]

$55 thats mind boggling. I will always go to the movies, no matter if I ever get an HDTV or not.

Same here. I'll just go to an earlier (cheaper) show. Actually, that's what we did on the 4th. We hit Cinemark at 11:00 that morning and saw Star Wars. For three of us it was about $25. That's bearable. [TL]

What did you think of star wars?
