"Exxon Mobil Corp. , the world's largest publicly traded oil company, on Monday reported a quarterly profit of $10.7 billion, capping a year of record earnings dominated by surging oil and gas prices. The results pushed up Exxon's profit for the year to a staggering $36.13 billion -- bigger than the economies of 125 of the 184 countries ranked by the World Bank. Profit rose 42 percent from 2004."---From Ruters.com

Wow, the same company that charges almost every other gas station more money per gallon. They must really be hurting by the whole Katrina deal. You know its amazing how the minute the hurricane hit the prices sky rocketed. Yet, the even when all the transportation issues were fixed it took months to go back down.

Also for almost no reason at all prices have spiked again in the past 3 weeks. Its to the point that oil companies barely come up with a reason why they are up. I hear because of the winter oil prices were up. Its the warmest winter that I can remember in the entire north east. It barely gets cold at all except for at night. Besides, shouldnt they catch on by now that people run the heat in the winter and try to catch up with it.

The sad thing is, there is nothing we can do about it at all.

This is the exactly what happens when a "president" is elected that is the bitch of the oil industry. To quote Drew: "This is your fault Bush voters."

No kidding, Keith, Jay is right. If you really want to do something about it, vote for Democrats. It's that simple. The energy bill that Democrats unsuccessfully fought against for all of Bush's first term included huge tax breaks for oil companies. In November of 2005, the Senate passed a bill to extend expiring tax cuts, which Bush threatened to veto because it included tax hikes on oil companies.

It is your fault, but there is something you can do about it. Vote for Menendez next November to keep Corzine's Senate seat in Democratic hands, and vote for the Democratic candidate for President in 2008. If you're not willing to do that, stop whining.

I doubt voting for a democrat will automatically make the problem go away. Perhaps a step in the right direction but the problem is much larger than that.

Some people are saying Hilary Clinton is the front runner for the democratics to put up in 2008. Which I think is dumb, because she has no shot of winning based on all the midwest ass-backward states that wouldnt vote for her just because she is a women.

Anyway, Hillary act like she is for the war which most people think she really isnt. She is just being told thats what she has to say in order to get elected.

Anything to solve the oil crisis is long term down the road. The demcrats offer no solutions at all to solve the problem. You figure getting the entire world on board for convert fuel from oil to whatever will take at least 20 years.

We may not have that kind of time. The democrats don't want to drill in Alaska, agree or disgree with that what reasonable soultions have they come up with?

Feel free to in inform me on Menendez, I know nothing about him.

Your right, Keith. We should stick with Bush who tells us once a year that we have to get ourselves away from addiction to oil and then does precisely nothing about it. That'll work, right? I mean, sooner or later, it's gonna work, right? Law of averages? No?

Damn.

Actually, Keith, you do make a good point. No, electing Democrats is not going to automatically fix anything. But electing Democrats creates a situation where fixing it is possible. Right now, a majority of Congress thinks record profits for Exxon Mobil is awesome, and they're happy to help in any way they can. And there's the Medicare Prescription Drug program, which does nothing to reduce the cost of prescription drugs, but does lots to increase the profits of the drug companies. Or the Bankruptcy Bill, which makes it harder for regular folks to declare bankruptcy, and easier for credit card companies to rake in the cash.

All of these outcomes were specifically intended by the Republican majority, and until we get rid of that majority, there is no chance of anything changing for the better. So, yes, electing Democrats won't do it by itself, but electing Democrats is a necessary first step. If you're not willing to vote for Democrats, you're not willing to address the problem. That's the bottom line.
