Peak oil is a crock. The dire predictions are mitigated by key overlooked factors, such as the fact that our ability to extract oil has gotten progressively more efficient over the last few decades. That means that we can get more usable oil out of a given quantity of crude. In effect, the total quantity of usable oil is constantly increasing.
Also, as energy technology gets more efficient, it takes less oil to produce the same amount of power, so the total amount of energy available from a given quanity of oil is also increasing. This effect will be greatly enhanced if we can start generating a greater proportion of our energy needs from alternative sources.
Peak oil advocates have been setting dates for when the peak will be reached. One was 1989, one was 1995, one was 2003. They've all come and gone, but the disaster still hasn't struck. It's like waiting for the Second Coming. Don't hold your breath. Sure, it might happen, but there's no particular reason to think it'll happen any time soon.

No, I've just read about Peak Oil before, and I don't buy it. I'm certainly not an expert. And I'm certainly no fan of our massive dependency on oil.
I just don't think these predictions of doom are very credible.
